PRINT-FRIENDLY VERSION Michael Yu Founder, Chairman & CEO New Oriental Education & Technology Group Inc. Interviewed on 09/07/2006 What educational services does New Oriental offer its students? We offer the students language training programs and the test preparations. We train students in overseas test preparations like, GRE, GMAT, SAT; plus to get them prepared to come to overseas universities for study. And also we offer students domestic training for tests, student tests for universities and then for graduate schools. And then we offer a wide arrange of programs in English language teaching, from oral, listening, reading, to writing from adult English to middle school and high school English and down to kids English. So our customers nowadays range from five years old up to 99 years old as we say. And also we offer other educational programs like grade one to grade 12 education and online education. Those are the programs we’re offering and I’m sure later in the future we are going to offer more programs to cater to the real needs of Chinese students. What is New Oriental's strategy to compete in a rapidly modernizing China? Our strategy is that to train our students in language areas and other areas to help them to have the necessary skills to compete in the modernization of China. Also an area we try to serve is the product of the modernization of China because with the modernization of China, we have the opportunity to grow up to today. How does the education market in China differ from the US? I think education marketing is somehow mature, no matter if it’s a public or private system. And the Chinese education market is just the beginning with the Americans of China. Nowadays people have more needs to get more education, to go to universities to study or to study the English language so that they find a better opportunity in the future. But that’s why we are doing education. We have confidence looking into the future. I’m sure Chinese people are eager now to learn. What has been your biggest reward since founding New Oriental? My biggest reward is that for so many years we have trained so many students in China and helped so many students to look into their better future; and also get a lot of experience in the educational areas and hope that in the future I can use my experience to help the Oriental and then to help the Chinese students more.
