PRINT-FRIENDLY VERSION Pedro Moreira Salles CEO and Vice Chairman União de Bancos Brasileiros S.A (Unibanco) Interviewed on 08/11/2008 Provide an overview of Unibanco: Unibanco is a large universal bank in Brazil that has approximately 27 million customers. And we go all the way from consumer finance, branch retail, credit-card businesses, automobile financing, mortgage business all the way to wholesale, large-customer base capital market activities, pension-fund activities. And we also have an important joint venture with American International Group in the insurance business. So we are a provider of all types or products and services to a large client base in Brazil. Discuss the current state of the Brazilian economy: The Brazilian economy has been growing steadily for the past two or three years. We expect Brazil this year to grow by about 4 and one-half percent. Our view is that in 2008, the number will be pretty much the same. And very importantly for our business, we see credit growing at double digits. Actually, we think this year, credit will grow about 25 percent, and we expect 2008 to post the same numbers. So Brazil is really in a very positive momentum. We have large foreign inflows into Brazil of direct investment. We have large capital market activities going on in Brazil, a lot of companies IPO-ing., a lot of companies doing follow-ons, and we think that this trend will continue. How does Unibanco serve its customers better than the competition? Unibanco has always tried to innovate. We were the first bank to have 24 hour call centers. We were the first bank to have teller machines, I mean, inside the branches 24 hours. We were the first bank to launch internet banking for our customers. We were the first bank to launch credit cards with no annual fees. We have set up as of the past three or four years a board composed of clients, and we sit with them three or four times a year to understand how they look at the bank, how they feel the service level is, what the quality of the bank is, and we take that very seriously and adapt our products and services to what we have learned from those interactions. So I think Unibanco is an organization that is very close to its customers, and we believe that this is an integral part of our success. What are the opportunities for Unibanco? The wealth of opportunities is really to explore the possibilities that are, a country that is growing brings to a financial intermediation. We have seen a 20, 25 percent growth last year. We expect the same type of growth in credit to go on this year. There's a lot of capital markets activities, there is a lot of demand for longer term financing. Real estate mortgages is only beginning. So when I look in the years to come, I think that banks, not only Unibanco, will have tremendous opportunities in Brazil. And we think that we are very well placed really to take advantage of these, of these opportunities. We play in most of the sectors of the Brazilian financial sector, and now we think that Unibanco will continue growing as it has done for the past many, many years.
