PRINT-FRIENDLY VERSION Jim McCluney President and Chief Executive Officer Emulex Corporation Interviewed on 03/20/2009 Provide an overview of Emulex: Emulex is a 30-year-old company; this year we’re celebrating our 30-year anniversary. We’re listed here on the New York Stock Exchange, and our business is in high-tech. We produce interconnect components that connect servers that run applications in the data center to external storage devices and we also provide components that help those external storage devices run efficiently. We’re headquartered in California. We’ve got development centers across the United States as well as overseas in India, and we have operational sales and marketing in Europe, in the Far East and China, so we’re fairly global in our reach. We have about 800 employees worldwide, and I’m pleased to say we’re a very successful company, profitable, a very strong balance sheet that allows us to invest in new technologies for the emerging data center requirements. What are Emulex’s growth strategies for 2009? This year we’re really focused on some of the new emerging trends in the IT sector, particularly focused on some of the things that IT managers are looking for to have better utilization of their assets; more power, lower costs, and this year we’ve got brand new architecture we’re launching, which we provide adapters, or converged network adapters. People are looking at running their data, and storage and file information over one wire, and we’ve got a brand new, first-to-market solution for that, and we think that will spur a lot of growth for Emulex over the next two or three years. We’re also looking at expanding into the international marketplace. Even though growth has slowed worldwide, there’s still some emerging markets with customers that are looking to acquire new IT technologies, and Emulex has opened facilities overseas to take advantage of that, expanding their sales and marketing footprint overseas. So we’re really focused on new innovation, getting into high growth areas, and expanding globally. How is Emulex addressing the needs of the new data center? The data centers are changing in this current environment, data center managers are looking for ways to better utilize their assets. Looking for efficiency, looking to run at lower cost and more power, and really to help them run their businesses more efficiently, and Emulex is bringing a new suite of products. There’s a new trend coming in the market, which we talk about in terms of convergence. It’s a convergence of data and storage traffic over single platform. We think that platform’s going to be Ethernet-based, which is fairly ubiquitous across all the data centers worldwide. We have a new suite of converged network adapters that provides multiple protocols, multiple capabilities to these data center managers, and we think that’s going to be a tremendous inflection point in the market this year, and in the next couple of years to come, which will propel growth for Emulex in that marketplace. So we’ll become even more relevant to the data centers. I mean today we have a range of fiber-channel based horse-bust adapters, which the fortune 1,000 all use, they trust their products, they’re very, very high quality; we go into mission critical environments. So we’re using that platform with new technologies to further enhance our capabilities and give the data center managers the tools they need to run the businesses efficiently. What lessons have you learned and implemented at Emulex? I think an important thing particularly as a CEO is to have a very clear vision of where you want to take the company, and be able to articulate that to your employees and your customers and behind that have clearly laid out strategies that can realize that vision even in these turbulent times, steering the company through that. The company has had many lives over the last 30 years, and this is a new chapter, a new piece of transformation opening up for us as we enter a new, converged marketplace. So I think that combined with being able to attract and retain really creative and innovative employees I think are the keys to success in any company, and especially so with Emulex.
